Dental Assisting Requirements

Florida

In Florida, you graduate with your Expanded Functions Dental Assisting (EFDA) Certificate. The Dental Radiographer Certification is optional, but we encourage it.

What You Need to Know

Because you completed a board-approved program, you're not required to get the Dental Radiographer Certification (Rule 64B5-9.011, Florida Administrative Code). Most dentists won't ask for it.

We still strongly encourage it. It's a great addition to your resume and helps you stand out.

Don't Miss This

Apply for your Dental Radiographer Certification within 12 months of the completion date on your Accelerated Academy certificate.

Your Step-by-Step

  1. Complete our 10-week course. You'll receive your Dental Assisting Certificate of Completion.
  2. Get 3 months of experience. Get hired by, or complete on-the-job training with, a Florida-licensed dentist. Paid or unpaid both count.
  3. Apply online. Submit the Dental Radiographer Certification application within 12 months of your certificate's completion date.

Trained in Another State?

Lots of our students from other states work in Florida. It's easier than it looks:

  1. Get hired as a dental assistant in Florida.
  2. After 3 months, take a 1-day dental radiology program. Search for one near you (usually $300–$350). If your dentist is a Florida Dental Association member, the FDA offers one, and your dentist may help with the cost.
  3. Get your Radiology Certification from the Florida Dental Board within 12 months of starting work.
