South Carolina Pharmacy Technician Requirement

South Carolina requires pharmacy technicians to register with the state. There are two categories: Registered Pharmacy Technician and State-Certified Pharmacy Technician, each with different requirements.

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Pass a criminal background check and provide fingerprints
  • Submit a pharmacy technician registration application to the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy
  • Choose one of the following paths:
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician
    • Complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program or employer-based training
    • No national certification required
  • State-Certified Pharmacy Technician
    • Hold active national certification (PTCB or ExCPT)
    • Complete 1,000 hours of practical experience under a licensed pharmacist
    • Complete a Board-approved training program
  • Renew registration every year

Pharmacy Technician Salary

Pharmacy technicians in South Carolina typically earn $17–$21 per hour. State-certified technicians may earn more and have expanded responsibilities.
