Pennsylvania Pharmacy Technician Requirement
As of now, Pennsylvania does not require pharmacy technicians to be licensed, registered, or certified at the state level. However, individual employers may set their own education and certification standards.
How to Become a Pharmacy Technician
- Be at least 18 years old (recommended by most employers)
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Apply directly to a pharmacy for employment
- Follow your employer’s training program, if required
- (Optional) Complete a pharmacy technician training program
- (Optional) Pass the PTCE or ExCPT to become nationally certified
- Renew national certification every two years if applicable
Pharmacy Technician Salary
Pharmacy technicians in Pennsylvania typically earn $17–$21 per hour. Certified technicians or those working in hospitals may earn more.
State Registration Requirements

- Pharmacies and employers may require formal training or national certification
- Technicians must work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist
Continuing Education Requirements
- No CE is required by the state of Pennsylvania
- PTCB Certification requires 20 CE hours every 2 years, including 1 hour in Pharmacy Law and 1 hour in Patient Safety
