Ohio Pharmacy Technician Requirement
Ohio licenses pharmacy technicians under two main types: Certified and Registered. Each path has different training and certification requirements.
How to Become a Pharmacy Technician
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Pass a criminal background check and provide fingerprints
- Choose one of the following license types:
- Registered Pharmacy Technician:
- Complete a Board-approved on-the-job training program through your pharmacy employer
- No national certification required
- Certified Pharmacy Technician:
- Complete a Board-approved or ASHP-accredited training program
- Pass the PTCE or ExCPT for national certification
- Submit an application to the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy
- Renew license annually
Pharmacy Technician Salary
Pharmacy technicians in Ohio typically earn $17–$21 per hour. Certified technicians earn more and may qualify for expanded duties or hospital positions.
State Registration Requirements

- All technicians must work under pharmacist supervision
- License must be renewed every year
Continuing Education Requirements
- Ohio does not require CE for Registered Technicians
- Certified Technicians must meet PTCB or NHA CE requirements:
- 20 CE hours every 2 years, including 1 hour in Pharmacy Law and 1 hour in Patient Safety
