North Carolina requires pharmacy technicians to register with the state. There are two technician types: non-certified (must complete training) and certified (with national certification).
How to Become a Pharmacy Technician
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Submit a pharmacy technician registration application to the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy
- Choose one of the following paths:
- Option A: Register as a non-certified technician and complete a Board-approved on-the-job training program provided by your employer
- Option B: Register as a certified technician with active PTCB or ExCPT certification
- Work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist
- Renew registration annually
