Maryland Pharmacy Technician Requirements
Maryland requires pharmacy technicians to be registered with the state and to complete specific training and certification requirements. There are two education paths available to meet the requirements.
How to Become a Pharmacy Technician
- Be at least 17 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED, or be currently enrolled and in good standing
- Submit a pharmacy technician registration application to the Maryland Board of Pharmacy
- Choose one of the following education paths:
- Option A: Complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program
- Option B: Hold national certification (PTCB or ExCPT) and provide proof of work experience and training
- Pass a national certification exam (if not already certified)
- Renew registration every two years
Pharmacy Technician Salary
Pharmacy technicians in Maryland typically earn $18–$22 per hour. Certified technicians and those in hospital or clinical settings may earn more.
State Registration Requirements
- Registration is required before beginning employment
- Applicants must meet training and/or certification requirements through one of two pathways
- Technicians must work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist
- Registration must be renewed every two years
Continuing Education Requirements
- Maryland does not require CE for state registration renewal
- PTCB Certification requires 20 CE hours every 2 years, including 1 hour in Pharmacy Law and 1 hour in Patient Safety
