Iowa Pharmacy Technician Requirements
Iowa requires pharmacy technicians to register with the state before working and obtain national certification within one year of registration. Completion of an accredited training program is also required.
How to Become a Pharmacy Technician
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold or work toward a high school diploma or GED
- Complete a pharmacy technician training program accredited by ASHP, an accredited college, or an approved pharmacy employer
- Submit a technician-trainee registration to the Iowa Board of Pharmacy before starting work
- Obtain national certification (PTCB or NHA) within one year of registration
- Upgrade to Certified Pharmacy Technician with proof of certification
- Renew registration every two years

Technicians earn an average of $17–$20 per hour, with higher wages in hospital or clinical settings.
