California Pharmacy Technician Requirements

California has its own licensure process and requires all pharmacy technicians to be licensed before working. Certification is not required but is highly valued and often preferred by employers.

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician

  • Be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED
  • Complete a pharmacy technician training program, such as:
    • PTCB-recognized program
    • Military training
    • Accredited college program
  • Submit your application to the California State Board of Pharmacy
  • Pass a background check and fingerprinting
  • Maintain your license through renewal and CE

State Registration Requirements
